Xabi Alonso has identified the developing partnership between Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers as a central part of Chelsea’s rebuilding project. The pair, who first played together in Manchester City’s academy and later represented England alongside one another, have quickly transferred their understanding to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea signed Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million in July, making him the most expensive British player in football history. He agreed a six-year contract with an option for an additional season, and his move followed a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 10 Premier League goals for Villa.
Rogers and Palmer have described each other as best friends in football, and their relationship was immediately visible during Chelsea’s opening league match at Fulham. All three members of Chelsea’s attacking trio scored in the 3-2 victory, with Rogers and Palmer both making decisive contributions alongside João Pedro.
Alonso believes the connection can develop into more than a friendship-based understanding. Palmer often operates between the lines, while Rogers can carry the ball from deeper positions or move into the left channel, creating space for one another and giving Chelsea greater flexibility against compact defences.
Rogers’ first season at Chelsea has already provided encouraging signs. He started the opening two Premier League matches, contributing a goal and an assist as Alonso’s side scored seven times. He later supplied three assists in a 6-3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds.
João Pedro has also added to Chelsea’s attacking balance, although the trio are still developing their combinations. Rogers acknowledged that he and João Pedro are continuing to build an understanding, while Palmer and João Pedro already had more experience playing together.
The early results have given Alonso an optimistic foundation after Chelsea finished 10th last season. The manager’s challenge is to turn the chemistry between Palmer and Rogers into a consistent source of goals, creativity and control across a full Premier League campaign.
