Wirtz Under the Microscope as Liverpool Seek Balance in Attack

Florian Wirtz remains under scrutiny at Liverpool, but the key factual correction is that Liverpool did not draw 2-2 with Bournemouth. Liverpool defeated Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal. There was no late equaliser from Victor Muñoz.

Wirtz started the match and had a mixed afternoon. Liverpool struggled to match Bournemouth’s intensity early on, particularly in midfield, but the German international became more influential as the game progressed. He found better spaces in the second half and helped Liverpool gain greater control, even though the final pass or decisive attacking action was often missing.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has consistently backed Wirtz amid criticism of his contribution. Before the Bournemouth match, Iraola said the 23-year-old should be assessed like any other player—not solely on goals and assists, but also on how the team performs when he is on the pitch.

“He should be judged like everybody. If he plays well, if he doesn’t play well, I always say, ‘How does the team play when you are on the pitch?’” Iraola said. “I’m very happy with Florian. I rate him very highly. He understands what we need from him, he’s trying to help in every aspect of the game.”

Iraola acknowledged that Wirtz will want to improve his end product, but emphasized that he is already contributing in several less visible areas of Liverpool’s play. The manager also revealed that Wirtz had been given a rest against Tottenham because of the physical demands he had placed on himself in recent matches.

After the 1-0 win over Bournemouth, Iraola offered a more measured assessment. He agreed that Wirtz had begun slowly as Liverpool lost midfield duels during
Bournemouth’s intense opening spell. However, he said Wirtz helped the team improve after that early phase and was “much better” in the second half, particularly when receiving the ball between the lines and turning toward goal.

The debate over Wirtz’s role is therefore likely to continue. Some supporters may prefer alternatives such as Cody Gakpo in a central attacking role or greater opportunities for younger players, but Iraola’s position is clear: Wirtz remains highly valued and is being judged on his overall impact rather than only his direct output.
Liverpool’s victory at Bournemouth showed both sides of the current discussion. Wirtz did not deliver a defining goal or assist, but he grew into a difficult away fixture and contributed to a result that gave Liverpool a third consecutive Premier League clean sheet.
