Lionel Messi Reaches 930 Career Goals as Inter Miami Draw With San Diego FC

Lionel Messi scored his 930th career goal with a free-kick as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with San Diego FC at Nu Stadium on 20 September 2026. The result extended Miami’s winless run in MLS to four consecutive draws, despite Messi reaching another personal milestone and Luis Suárez giving the hosts a second-half lead.

San Diego took the lead in the 12th minute when Jeppe Tverskov’s through ball found Anders Dreyer, who chipped Dayne St. Clair. Messi equalised in the 24th minute with a left-footed free-kick that clipped the post and went in via goalkeeper CJ dos Santos. It was his 20th MLS goal of the 2026 season, his 75th direct free-kick goal in his career and his 101st goal for Inter Miami, coming four days after his 100th for the club in the Campeones Cup win over Cruz Azul.

Inter Miami went ahead in the 74th minute when Rodrigo De Paul set up Luis Suárez, who finished first-time for his 13th MLS goal of the campaign. San Diego responded in the 82nd minute as Tverskov again supplied Dreyer, who finished to complete his brace and make it 2-2. In stoppage time, Messi had three clear chances to win the game, but dos Santos made key saves to preserve the draw.

The point left Inter Miami on 46 points from 26 matches (12 wins, 10 draws, 4 defeats), 11 points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville SC. For San Diego, Dreyer’s double took him to 11 league goals for the season and helped them secure a valuable away point in their playoff push.
