Thomas Tuchel has handed Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer recalls to the England national team as part of an extensive reshuffle for the upcoming Nations League schedule. The England head coach made eight changes to his 27-man squad following the team’s third-place finish at the World Cup. Real Madrid right-back Alexander-Arnold returns to the international setup for the first time since June 2025, alongside Chelsea’s Palmer, who was another high-profile tournament omission. Manchester City playmaker Phil Foden is among the prominent names left out of the squad for the three-week training camp.
Addressing Alexander-Arnold’s return, Tuchel emphasized that the Real Madrid defender must earn his spot back in the lineup after missing out on the World Cup campaign. Tuchel stood by his previous selection decisions while welcoming the right-back back into the fold, noting that Alexander-Arnold has consistently declared his willingness to battle for his country. Tuchel stated that it remains a direct competition, acknowledging that the coaching staff trusted other players during the tournament but asserting that the current camp provides the platform for Alexander-Arnold to prove his place.
Alexander-Arnold’s earlier exclusion from the squad had drawn significant scrutiny, with Tuchel previously describing the choice to prefer other right-back options as a difficult and potentially unfair sporting decision. Arsenal defender Ben White had been called up as a replacement for Jarell Quansah after ending his self-imposed international exile dating back to Gareth Southgate’s tenure. Despite Kyle Walker retiring from international soccer and Reece James suffering from injury, Alexander-Arnold had remained on the outside looking in until this latest selection.
Palmer’s inclusion comes after an irresistible start to the season with Chelsea, where the attacking midfielder has registered four goals and two assists across six appearances. Having struggled with fitness following the Club World Cup, the rested playmaker has rediscovered his form, developing dynamic link-up play alongside England team-mate Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro. His return reinforces an overhauled group that also sees Morgan Gibbs-White included, alongside Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire pushing for involvement, while Everton’s James Garner edges closer to a senior debut.
England face a demanding schedule during the three-week camp, featuring four Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. Having secured third place in the world over the summer, Tuchel’s restructured 27-man group provides an immediate opportunity for recalled players to re-establish themselves within the national team hierarchy.
