Arsenal return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Sunderland, aiming to extend their perfect start to the campaign after a hard-earned Champions League win in Naples. Mikel Arteta’s side defeated Napoli 1–0 on Wednesday, with captain Martin Ødegaard producing a superb 75th-minute strike to settle the league-phase opener.
The Gunners dominated much of the contest at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona but had to remain patient after missing several opportunities. Ødegaard eventually supplied the decisive moment, driving a low effort in off the post from the edge of the penalty area to score his fourth goal in five appearances this season. Arsenal’s victory continued a run that has seen them win their opening five matches in all competitions.
Arteta reported no fresh injury problems after the Napoli win, though Arsenal remain without William Saliba, who is continuing his recovery from a back injury. Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber are both doubts because of muscle and groin issues respectively, leaving Arteta to weigh up his defensive options before the journey to the Stadium of Light.
The Arsenal manager is expected to make changes after the midweek trip to Italy. Kai Havertz, who was rested in Naples, could return to lead the line, while Ben White, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori are among the players pushing for starts. Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimarães also offer Arteta further midfield options as he manages the workload of a squad entering a demanding stretch of fixtures.
Sunderland face selection problems of their own. Dan Ballard is unavailable after a straight red card, while Romaine Mundle, Arthur Masuaku and Bertrand Traoré are also expected to miss the match. Nicolo Savona remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from a knee problem, and Ibrahim Sangaré’s availability is subject to a late fitness assessment.
Le Bris will therefore need to reshape his defensive unit against an Arsenal side carrying confidence and momentum into the weekend. The Gunners have combined attacking control with a series of important results early in the season, but Sunderland will view a home match under the lights as an opportunity to disrupt Arteta’s rhythm and test the visitors after their European exertions.
Kick-off at the Stadium of Light is scheduled for 8:00pm on Saturday.
