Manchester United are continuing to assess options across several positions as they plan for future transfer windows, with striker, midfield, goalkeeper and defensive recruitment all expected to remain priorities. The club’s search takes place against the backdrop of a 4–0 Champions League victory over Sabah at Old Trafford, a result that marked United’s return to the competition after almost three years away.
Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez completed a comfortable win. United led 3–0 at half-time, with Šeško again on the scoresheet, and Martínez added the fourth after the break. The result gave Michael Carrick’s side an encouraging start to the league phase, although the fixture list is about to become considerably more demanding, beginning with Sunday’s Manchester derby.
Šeško remains an important part of United’s attacking plans after his early contribution in Europe, but recruitment staff are understood to be monitoring the wider forward market as the club considers its longer-term options at centre-forward. Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has been linked with several leading European clubs, though claims of an agreed or imminent £40 million United approach should be treated cautiously without confirmation from either club or the player’s representatives.
United are also expected to examine midfield reinforcements as the squad develops beyond the Casemiro era. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba have all been associated with elite-club interest, but no confirmed United bid or valuation has been established. Juventus forward Joshua Zirkzee has likewise been linked with possible market interest, although there is no indication that a deal is close.
Goalkeeper planning could also become a significant issue. Porto’s Diogo Costa has long been regarded as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers, and both Manchester clubs have been linked with him in transfer speculation. Reports of a specific Manchester City offer or an imminent United move, however, remain unconfirmed. Porto’s negotiating position would be strengthened by Costa’s contract terms and the level of interest expected in a goalkeeper of his profile.
At full-back and across the defensive line, United continue to be linked with younger, versatile targets. Pierre Kalulu has been discussed as a possible option capable of operating at right-back or centre-back, while Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown has attracted wider attention with his performances in Germany. Any suggestion that United have already prepared formal proposals for either player should be treated as speculative unless supported by official confirmation.
Elsewhere in the Champions League, Manchester City opened their campaign with a 2–0 victory over Porto at the Estádio do Dragão. Erling Haaland scored both goals, striking at the beginning and end of the second half, as City overcame a tense occasion that included a confrontation between players and staff in the tunnel at half-time.
Haaland was also involved in a stoppage-time altercation with Porto midfielder Pablo Rosario after being brought down. Both players received yellow cards, and Haaland later alleged that Rosario had grabbed his bottom during the incident. UEFA was expected to review the referee’s and match delegate’s reports before deciding whether any further action was required over the match’s flashpoints.
For United, the Sabah result offered a positive start in Europe, but it does not alter the scale of the longer-term rebuild. Their recruitment work will continue to focus on balancing immediate needs with younger, high-level additions capable of strengthening the squad across multiple positions.
