Noahkai Banks has committed his international future to Germany, accepting a call-up to the Germany Under-21 squad for September’s European Championship qualifiers against Latvia, Malta and Georgia. The decision ends a long period of uncertainty for the 19-year-old Augsburg centre-back and represents a significant blow to the USMNT, which had hoped to secure one of its most promising dual-national defenders.
Banks, who was born in Honolulu to an American father and a German-Spanish mother, moved to Germany at seven weeks old and grew up in the country. He progressed through FC Augsburg’s academy from the age of nine and has made 35 first-team appearances, scoring one goal. He previously represented the United States at U-17, U-19 and U-20 level, including at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Because he has appeared for the US in an official youth competition, Banks must complete a one-time change of association with FIFA to switch to Germany. Germany U-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo confirmed that Banks and Tunisian dual-national Louey Ben Farhat have “chosen to represent Germany,” and said the federation had been in contact with both players for some time.
The USMNT had made repeated efforts to retain Banks. Mauricio Pochettino called him into a senior camp in September 2025, and Banks described the experience positively, but he declined a subsequent invitation in March 2026 while still weighing his options. Pochettino later said the staff could not consider him for selection while his future remained undecided, and after Banks accepted the Germany U-21 call-up, the coach stressed that the federation wants players who are fully committed.
For Germany, securing Banks adds depth to an already strong U-21 pool as they begin their Euro qualifying campaign. For the USMNT, the loss is felt acutely in a position where they have fewer established options at centre-back, and it underscores the ongoing challenge of converting dual-national prospects into long-term senior internationals.
