Chelsea were held to a 2–2 draw by newly promoted Hull City at Stamford Bridge, as Mohamed Belloumi’s first-half double cancelled out goals from Morgan Rogers and João Pedro. The result extended Hull’s unbeaten start to four Premier League matches, while Chelsea remained fourth with seven points from four games.
Chelsea made the fast start that Xabi Alonso had demanded after the previous weekend’s 2–1 loss at Arsenal. Rogers put the home side ahead in the seventh minute, taking João Pedro’s pass and driving a finish in at the near post. It was the first time Hull had conceded in the league this season after clean sheets in their opening three fixtures.
Hull responded with remarkable efficiency. Belloumi equalised in the 28th minute from Ryan Giles’ delivery, then scored again six minutes later after Oli McBurnie supplied the final pass. The Tigers went into half-time 2–1 ahead despite Chelsea controlling much of the ball and appearing the more threatening team for long spells.
Chelsea restored parity in the 66th minute. Cole Palmer created space on the right and delivered a low cross for João Pedro, who struck powerfully into the roof of the net. The goal was João Pedro’s third in four league appearances this season, and it gave him a goal and an assist for the third time in four Premier League matches.
The hosts pressed hard for a late winner, bringing on Danny Welbeck and adding further attacking pressure, but Hull defended resolutely to take a point. Chelsea finished with roughly two-thirds of possession, yet the game again exposed the defensive fragility Alonso had highlighted before kick-off.
Hull had arrived in west London with one of the league’s best early defensive records, having conceded no goals in their opening three matches. Their first-half comeback showed another strength of Sergej Jakirović’s side: they were compact without the ball, direct and clinical once chances appeared in transition.
For Chelsea, the draw reinforced the contrast defining their early season. Their forward line of Rogers, Palmer and João Pedro is producing goals and combining well, but defensive lapses have repeatedly forced the team into recoveries rather than allowing them to control matches. Alonso’s task is to retain the attacking fluency while making the structure without the ball considerably more reliable.
