Chelsea will be without Moisés Caicedo, Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha for their Premier League match against Hull City, with Xabi Alonso refusing to rush any of the injured players back. Caicedo may return for the trip to Brentford on September 18, while Palestra is nearing a comeback from a quad injury and could make his competitive debut either at Brentford or against Bournemouth after the international break.
Caicedo has been sidelined since suffering a recurrence of a calf problem during his brief return against Brighton. The Ecuador midfielder had missed Chelsea’s opening two games, came on against his former club, then lasted only 14 minutes before being forced off. Alonso later admitted that bringing him back at that point may have been premature.
The 24-year-old consequently missed Chelsea’s 2–1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal and their 6–3 Carabao Cup win over Leeds United. Asked whether Caicedo would be available for Hull, Alonso replied: “Not yet. We’ll see for Brentford. We’re not at a moment to take risks with him. Not yet; we are not yet.”
Palestra, the summer signing from Atalanta, is still awaiting his competitive Chelsea debut after suffering a quad injury in training shortly before the opening match at Fulham. Alonso described the Italian wing-back as being in the final stages of recovery, but said Chelsea will judge his readiness carefully rather than set an artificial return date.
“The injury is something on the quad,” Alonso said. “He’s almost in the last stages of the recovery, so we will see. If [he is] not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure.” The Bournemouth match is scheduled after the international break, meaning Palestra’s absence should not be expected to extend deep into the season if his rehabilitation continues smoothly.
Henderson and Emegha are also unavailable against Hull. Henderson has been recovering from a wrist injury sustained during England’s World Cup celebrations, which has limited his training and match fitness. Emegha, who joined Chelsea from Strasbourg, suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season and has yet to make a competitive appearance for the club.
Alonso said of Henderson and Emegha: “Not tomorrow. We hope they can be for Brentford, but we’ll see.” Unlike Palestra, neither player has a firm confirmed return date, so Brentford should be regarded as a target rather than a guarantee.
The injury situation places particular emphasis on Chelsea’s midfield balance. Caicedo’s absence removes an important defensive presence at a time when Alonso has already said the team must become more controlled without the ball. Chelsea’s attacking football has been productive early in the season, but their manager has repeatedly stressed that defensive improvement will require a collective effort from every position.
