Dominik Szoboszlai issues clear Liverpool mandate as transition claims dismissed

Dominik Szoboszlai has urged Liverpool’s new signings to embrace the club’s expectations immediately, insisting that the team cannot continue to use transition as an excuse for underperformance.

Liverpool have undergone significant changes, including a new head coach and the departures of several established players. Szoboszlai acknowledged that the squad had previously pointed to those changes when explaining inconsistent results, but said the players must now take responsibility.

“It’s enough to speak about that we need time,” Szoboszlai said. “Obviously last season things weren’t going well and we were saying that new players came in and a couple of players left, such as Lucho and Darwin, and it didn’t work out.

“So we were saying we need time because of the transition. Now we will say that Mo left, a legend, and Robbo, the same. Every year something is going to happen. So at one point we have to take the responsibility and stop making excuses, because we are Liverpool FC.”

The Hungary international also reminded Liverpool’s summer arrivals of the responsibility attached to representing the club.

“Believe that Liverpool is one of the best clubs in the world and the best club in England,” he said. “We have to play like that as well, because this badge is very big and you have to make the supporters proud again.”

Szoboszlai added that Liverpool could not spend several seasons rebuilding before being expected to compete.

“We don’t have three years to renew everybody and start again,” he said. “So I think it starts now and we are there again. It’s a long season.”

The comments came as Liverpool continued their adaptation to life under Andoni Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot during the summer. The club’s early-season results have kept scrutiny on the squad, but Szoboszlai’s message was that responsibility must rest with the players rather than with the transition itself.
