Manchester United are monitoring Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub as a potential long-term addition to their academy pipeline while they continue efforts to persuade JJ Gabriel to remain at the club. However, it is premature to describe Mesloub as United’s “primary target” or as a confirmed replacement for Gabriel, whose departure has not been finalised.
Mesloub, 16, made an extraordinary senior debut for Lens in May 2026, scoring the winner against Nantes with his first touch shortly after coming on as a substitute. The goal secured a 1-0 victory, helped Lens qualify for the Champions League and made Mesloub the fastest player to score on his Ligue 1 debut.
United’s scouting department has reportedly carried out extensive work on the player, who can operate on the right wing or in central attacking areas. But he is viewed as a prospective, long-term academy signing rather than a player expected to make an immediate first-team impact.
Chelsea and Arsenal have also scouted Mesloub, while Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco are understood to be interested in keeping the teenager in France. Lens are under no immediate pressure to sell: Mesloub signed a contract running until 2030.
Any move to England faces a fundamental regulatory obstacle. Mesloub will not turn 18 until late 2027, and FIFA rules generally prevent international transfers of under-18 players. Unless an applicable exception applies, he would not be able to join an English club until 2028. That makes an imminent United, Chelsea or Arsenal transfer highly unlikely.
The article should also correct the claim that JJ Gabriel is “expected to complete a move to Chelsea.” Gabriel has requested to cancel his Manchester United registration, and Chelsea are interested, but no agreement has been reached. United remain in dialogue with the 15-year-old’s representatives and are still seeking to retain him
