England have called up Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White after five players withdrew from Thomas Tuchel’s squad because of injury concerns. Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento will all miss the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
The five absences remove important experience and balance across England’s team. Palmer had been recalled after his omission from England’s 2026 World Cup squad but has withdrawn with a minor injury. Rice played the full 90 minutes in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton before becoming unavailable, while Manchester United assessed Rashford and Mainoo after both were substituted late in the 1-1 draw at Fulham. Livramento, meanwhile, has had limited minutes for Newcastle United this season.
Garner and Gibbs-White will report to St George’s Park on Tuesday. Garner won his first two senior England caps in March 2026, while Gibbs-White has made six senior appearances. Both have an immediate opportunity to establish themselves in a reshaped midfield group featuring Jude Bellingham, Elliot Anderson, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Alex Scott.
England begin their Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday 26 September, before travelling to Prague to face Czechia on 29 September. Tuchel’s side then visit Croatia in Rijeka on 3 October and conclude the four-match window with a return fixture against Czechia at Wembley on 6 October.
The revised squad is:
– Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Jason Steele, James Trafford.
– Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrad Branthwaite, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guéhi, Lewis Hall, Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly and Jarell Quansah.
– Midfielders: Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, James Garner, Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Alex Scott.
– Forwards: Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Rio Ngumoha, Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze.
