Manchester City claimed a dramatic 1–0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford despite playing with 10 men from the 23rd minute, when Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes. City absorbed prolonged pressure after the dismissal, while United were unable to convert their numerical advantage into a breakthrough.

The decisive moment arrived on the hour mark. Josko Gvardiol’s cross reached Erling Haaland at the back post and the Norway striker finished from close range. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the on-field decision, determining that Haaland himself had remained onside.

The decision sparked immediate controversy because City midfielder Enzo Fernández was in an offside position and attempted to reach the same ball. Although Fernández did not touch it, Manchester United argued that his movement affected Lisandro Martínez’s ability to defend the cross.

Professional refereeing body Pro Ref later accepted that the award of the goal was an “error of judgement.” Its statement said VAR did not sufficiently recognise the likely impact of Fernández’s position and should have recommended an on-field review.
