India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill met Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk and shared a photograph of the encounter on Instagram, creating a widely shared crossover moment between cricket and football. Gill posted the image in a carousel with the simple caption, “VVD.”
The meeting brought together two athletes who captain major sides in their respective sports. Van Dijk remains Liverpool’s captain and also leads the Netherlands national team, while Gill has taken on India’s Test and ODI captaincy responsibilities.
Gill’s meeting with the Liverpool defender followed India’s 1–0 Test-series victory over Sri Lanka in August. The two-match series did not end in a clean sweep—Sri Lanka prevented that outcome—but India secured the series under Gill’s captaincy.
The image drew attention largely because it united two enormous sporting audiences: Gill’s following in Indian cricket and Van Dijk’s standing among Liverpool and football supporters worldwide. Neither player appears to have shared detailed comments about their conversation, so claims about a deeper discussion of leadership, tactical ideas or personal mutual admiration would be speculation. What is confirmed is the meeting itself and Gill’s social-media post.
