Liverpool launched their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Atlético Madrid at Anfield, as Alexis Mac Allister’s superb second-half strike completed the turnaround after Marcos Llorente had put the visitors ahead. Dominik Szoboszlai equalised before the break, while Rio Ngumoha impressed on his first Champions League start and helped create the opening for Mac Allister’s decisive finish.
Ngumoha described the experience as “crazy” after playing a prominent role in the victory. The teenager’s movement and composure provided Liverpool with an attacking outlet, and his contribution offered further evidence of his potential under head coach Andoni Iraola.
Liverpool now host Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday, with Iraola facing late decisions over two of his attacking options. Bradley Barcola was withdrawn during the second half against Atlético after suffering cramp, but the Liverpool boss said there was no injury and expects the summer signing to be available if he comes through Friday’s final training session without further issues.
“Barcola was just cramps,” Iraola said. “There’s no injury. He should be available if everything goes normal.”
Cody Gakpo remains a doubt after missing the Atlético fixture with adductor discomfort. The Dutch forward did not train on Thursday, and Liverpool planned to assess him again on Friday before deciding whether he can feature against Fulham.
“He doesn’t have a proper injury, but he finished with niggles in both of the adductors,” Iraola said. “We will try with him and see if he is ready for tomorrow or if we need to wait for the next one.”
With Barcola expected to recover and Ngumoha having demonstrated his readiness on the European stage, Liverpool have useful options in attack as they aim to carry their Champions League momentum into the weekend.
