Blackburn Rovers secured a 2–1 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale in another fiercely contested Lancashire derby. Lewis Miller opened the scoring, Preston responded almost immediately after the restart, but Andri Guðjohnsen eventually restored Blackburn’s advantage to give Valérien Ismaël’s side another important Championship win.
The result represented Blackburn’s fourth victory in five league matches and continued their recovery after a difficult opening period. The Rovers moved up to 16th in the table, six points outside the playoff places, having begun the campaign with seven defeats in their first ten league games.
## Blackburn Recover Momentum
Blackburn made the stronger start and were rewarded when Miller found the net. Preston’s response was immediate, with the equaliser arriving seconds after the restart and reigniting the atmosphere inside Deepdale.
The hosts could not sustain that momentum, however. Blackburn regained control as the match progressed, and Guðjohnsen’s second-half finish ultimately proved decisive. The result also extended Preston’s wait for a home victory over Blackburn. Their last win against Rovers at Deepdale came in October 2019, when Alex Neil’s side won 3–2.
Preston had shown signs of improvement in recent performances, particularly through the contribution of Caleb Wiley. The young defender scored his first senior goal in the preceding 3–1 defeat by Bristol City and had continued to attract attention from his left-wing-back position.
Callum Lang remained one of Preston’s principal attacking outlets, but the Lilywhites struggled to turn their competitive approach into enough clear chances. A late challenge by Ben Whiteman also generated controversy as Preston searched for another route back into the match.
## Players Reflect on Character
After the derby, Wiley and Lang focused on the mentality required to respond to a difficult run of results. Both players stressed the importance of collective effort, tactical discipline and maintaining unity during a demanding Championship schedule.
Their comments reflected a broader frustration within the Preston squad: performances have often contained promising spells, but the team have not been able to convert those moments into points. The defeat to Blackburn made that issue even more urgent.
Blackburn, by contrast, can take confidence from the way they managed the emotional pressure of the derby. Ismaël’s side responded well after Preston’s equaliser and showed the composure required to regain control away from home.
## Different Directions
The result leaves the two clubs at contrasting stages of their campaigns. Blackburn’s recent run has moved them closer to the playoff picture and provided evidence that their early problems can be overcome.
Preston now face the task of ending their losing streak and turning their competitive performances into results. Wiley and Lang’s emphasis on character will be important, but the Lilywhites also need greater consistency in both penalty areas.
With the Championship season still in its early stages, neither club’s campaign is decided. Blackburn’s derby victory, however, gives Ismaël’s team renewed momentum, while Preston must find an immediate response to avoid allowing a difficult beginning to become a damaging one.
