Liverpool’s 2–0 victory over Ipswich Town offered more than just Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League win. The performance also highlighted the tactical flexibility of several new arrivals, most notably Ronald Araújo, who adapted impressively to an unfamiliar role at right-back.
Araújo joined Liverpool from Barcelona on loan with an optional purchase clause reportedly worth £47.1 million. Although normally deployed at centre-back, the Uruguay international started on the right side of the defence and quickly justified Iraola’s decision.
He used his strength and timing to neutralise Ipswich’s attacks, regularly stepping forward to challenge opponents and closing down space before danger developed. His display added defensive authority to a Liverpool back four that also included Virgil van Dijk and young centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.
## Jacquet Shows Composure
Jacquet operated alongside Van Dijk and displayed impressive composure for a young defender. His positioning helped Liverpool manage Ipswich’s response after Alexander Isak scored twice inside the opening nine minutes.
The teenager did have one minor lapse, but recovered immediately and continued to make sensible decisions under pressure. Playing alongside Van Dijk should provide valuable experience as Jacquet adjusts to the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League.Liverpool’s defensive structure remained solid throughout the match. ## Midfield Provides Control
Alexis Mac Allister was another standout performer. The World Cup winner regularly won challenges, regained possession and disrupted Ipswich’s attempts to build through midfield.
He worked alongside Dominik Szoboszlai, whose industrious performance helped Liverpool cover ground even as the Hungary international appeared to tire during the second half. Ryan Gravenberch again began on the bench, allowing Mac Allister and Szoboszlai to provide the central balance Iraola wanted.
The midfield pairing was especially important after Liverpool took an early lead. Rather than pursuing a frantic third goal, the visitors were able to slow the tempo, retain possession and force Ipswich to play around a well-organised block.
## Gakpo Drives Attack
Cody Gakpo was central to Liverpool’s attacking performance. He provided the assists for both of Isak’s goals, including a clever outside-of-the-boot pass for the second finish. The Dutch forward’s movement into the penalty area gave Ipswich repeated problems.
Victor Muñoz supplied energy from the flank and offered Liverpool an outlet whenever Ipswich pushed forward. His pace and willingness to run behind the defence helped stretch the home side, although his final decision-making in the box still requires refinement.
Isak remained the decisive figure. His two goals inside the first nine minutes gave Liverpool the platform for victory and reinforced his status as the team’s primary scoring threat. If he remains fit, the Sweden international appears capable of delivering a 20-goal league season.
Florian Wirtz also contributed to Liverpool’s attacking fluidity, operating between the lines and combining with Gakpo and Isak. The forward group’s movement allowed Liverpool to switch quickly between controlled possession and direct attacks.
## A Promising Foundation
The result suggested that Liverpool are developing a more balanced side under Iraola. Araújo’s adaptability, Jacquet’s composure, Mac Allister’s ball-winning and the Isak–Gakpo partnership all contributed to a disciplined away performance.
Liverpool’s summer investment has created competition across the squad, and Iraola now faces the challenge of managing those options across the Premier League and Champions League. The victory at Portman Road provided an encouraging early sign that the new additions can work within his tactical system.
