Estevão Willian is reportedly concerned about his limited role at Chelsea under manager Xabi Alonso and could consider his future when the January transfer window opens. The 19-year-old Brazilian remains committed to succeeding at Stamford Bridge, but his lack of Premier League minutes has created uncertainty over his place in the squad.
Estevão has made just two appearances for Chelsea this season and has played only seven minutes in the Premier League. He came off the bench during the opening league match against Fulham, completed 80 minutes in the Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town and was an unused substitute in the 4–3 win over Brighton.
The situation is a sharp contrast to the reputation Estevão brought with him from Palmeiras. He joined Chelsea after attracting interest from leading European clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, and made an encouraging first campaign in England. The forward scored eight goals and registered four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions before a hamstring injury disrupted the final part of his season and ruled him out of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Competition for places has become increasingly difficult. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro have established themselves as Alonso’s preferred attacking combination during Chelsea’s strong opening to the campaign. Palmer occupies the central creative role, while Rogers has operated from the left and João Pedro has provided a consistent goal threat.
Estevão’s natural preference for a central attacking position places him in direct competition with Palmer. His patient possession style also differs from the quick, direct transitions Alonso has sought to establish. That tactical contrast, combined with the strength of Chelsea’s attacking options, has made it difficult for the Brazilian to secure a regular starting role.
Chelsea’s decision to retain Jamie Gittens has added further competition on the flanks. The 22-year-old remains another option for Alonso, while the manager’s established front three have already produced a significant attacking return. Chelsea have also finished the summer window without European competition, meaning opportunities for fringe players could be more limited because of the smaller number of matches.
Estevão’s immediate priority is therefore to earn greater involvement during the autumn. Chelsea are unlikely to consider a permanent sale of a player regarded as one of the club’s most valuable young talents, and any potential departure in January would more likely take the form of a loan.
The winger remains happy living in London and wants to establish himself at Chelsea. However, if his opportunities remain restricted over the coming months, his representatives could reassess the situation when the winter window opens on 1 January.
For Alonso, managing Estevão’s development will be an important part of maintaining squad harmony. The Brazilian has the technical ability to influence matches, but Chelsea’s attacking depth means that his pathway to regular football will depend on tactical adaptation, patience and the opportunities created by injuries, rotation and form.
The January window is still several months away, leaving Estevão time to change the situation on the pitch. If he earns a larger role, Chelsea can preserve one of South America’s most promising young talents. If his limited involvement continues, the club may face a difficult decision over whether regular football elsewhere is necessary for his development.
