Gabriel Jesus has completed his transfer from Arsenal to Barcelona, ending his four-year spell in north London. The 29-year-old Brazil international has joined the La Liga champions on a three-year contract, with the final agreement reportedly worth €15 million (£12.85 million) and including a sell-on fee.
Jesus had been made available for transfer after falling outside Mikel Arteta’s plans. He trained separately from Arsenal’s first team and was left out of the squad for the club’s opening two Premier League fixtures. Napoli had also shown interest, but Barcelona moved decisively to secure the forward before the transfer deadline.
The move brings Jesus back to Spain after four seasons with Arsenal, where he made 123 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. He arrived in London from Manchester City in 2022 after developing under Pep Guardiola, who praised his willingness to combine attacking responsibility with defensive work.
That selfless approach has been one of the defining features of Jesus’ career. He has regularly operated as both a central striker and a wide attacker, pressing defenders, linking play and creating space for teammates. His ability to contribute beyond goals made him an important part of Manchester City’s title-winning squads and later gave Arsenal tactical flexibility in the final third.
Jesus’ development at the highest level was shaped by the experienced players around him at City. He shared dressing rooms with Vincent Kompany, Sergio Agüero, Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish and Rodri. At Arsenal, he worked alongside Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice during the club’s Premier League title challenge.
Barcelona view Jesus as a valuable addition because of his movement, pressing and positional versatility. The Brazilian can lead the line, drift into wider areas or drop between the lines to connect midfield with the attack. Those qualities provide Barcelona with an alternative profile in the forward positions and give the coaching staff greater flexibility when adjusting their attacking structure.
The transfer also represents a significant personal opportunity for Jesus. His career began in difficult circumstances, playing football in Brazil before rising through the professional game and earning a move to Manchester City. Since then, he has won major domestic honours and established himself as a proven international forward.
Jesus has also developed a close relationship with Neymar, whom he regards as the greatest player of his generation. That connection reflects the wider influence of Brazilian football on his playing style, although his career at elite European clubs has been defined by tactical discipline and a willingness to prioritise collective success.
For Arsenal, the transfer removes a player who had become surplus to requirements and creates additional space in the attacking squad. For Barcelona, it delivers an experienced forward at a relatively modest initial fee, with the possibility of further payments through add-ons and future transfer arrangements.
Jesus now begins a new chapter at Camp Nou, where his pressing, intelligence and versatility will be tested in a different tactical environment. After leaving Arsenal on the final day of the summer window, he joins Barcelona with the opportunity to revive his regular first-team career in La Liga.
