Arsenal continued their strong start to the 2026–27 Premier League season with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute, giving the defending champions six points from their opening two matches.
The result represented a major improvement for Villa after their 4–0 defeat to Brighton on the opening weekend. Unai Emery handed debuts to goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and striker Nicolas Jackson, while Arsenal made two changes to the side that defeated Coventry City.
The opening half was tense and closely contested. Neither team managed to register a shot on target before halftime, although Villa came closest when Emiliano Buendía’s long-range effort struck the crossbar.
Arsenal gradually gained control after the interval. The breakthrough arrived just before the hour mark when Eberechi Eze found Riccardo Calafiori, who delivered a low cross into the six-yard box. Saka reacted quickest and finished from close range to score his second goal in as many league matches.
Villa attempted to respond, but Arsenal defended their advantage effectively. David Raya was rarely troubled, while Gabriel and Yerson Mosquera helped limit Jackson’s influence. The new Villa striker worked hard to hold the ball up but was unable to register a shot on target.
Suzuki also made an important save to deny Kai Havertz, who was sent through on goal after Arsenal extended their lead. The Japanese goalkeeper recovered from an uncertain moment at a corner to keep Villa within touching distance.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Arsenal showed the composure required to see out the match. The victory extended their winning start and moved them joint-top of the table alongside Manchester City, with goal difference separating the two teams.
For Villa, the defeat leaves them without a point or a shot on target after their opening two fixtures. Emery must now improve the team’s attacking output, with Jackson and the rest of the forward line yet to find their rhythm.
Arsenal’s performance was not spectacular, but it demonstrated the champions’ ability to win difficult away matches. Arteta’s side were patient, limited Villa’s opportunities and relied on Saka’s quality to settle a tight contest.
The victory also marked Mikel Arteta’s 250th Premier League match as Arsenal manager. His team will now prepare for another demanding run of fixtures, including a home match against Chelsea and a Champions League trip to Napoli.
