The 2026 summer transfer window is approaching its Tuesday deadline, but Julián Álvarez’s future remains unresolved. The Argentina international wants to leave Atlético Madrid for Barcelona, yet Atlético have repeatedly stated that they will not negotiate with their La Liga rivals.
The dispute intensified last week when Álvarez missed three consecutive training sessions. Atlético attributed the absences to illness or an indisposition, while the timing led to widespread speculation that the forward was attempting to force a transfer. He was subsequently left out of Atlético’s squad for Saturday’s 3–1 victory over Sevilla.
Álvarez returned to group training on Sunday, suggesting that Atlético are preparing for the possibility that he will remain at the club after the deadline. The club have maintained that they want to welcome him back and expect him to play an important role during the season.
Atlético’s position on Barcelona has remained absolute. The club’s board has unanimously supported the decision not to negotiate with the Catalan side, while chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has also ruled out discussions with Barcelona. Atlético have accused the Spanish champions and the player’s representatives of acting unprofessionally during the transfer saga.
Barcelona previously made an offer of approximately €100 million, but Atlético rejected it. Reports indicate that the Madrid club would consider selling Álvarez to another team for around €150 million, although that figure has not been formally confirmed as an agreed transfer fee.
The situation has given Arsenal an opportunity. Mikel Arteta remains interested in adding a major attacking signing, and the Premier League club have held discussions with Atlético. Arsenal are prepared to explore a deal if Álvarez gives them permission to proceed, but the player’s preference remains Barcelona.
Arsenal could also include an attacker in a wider agreement. Gabriel Jesus has been linked with a move in the opposite direction, although the Brazilian is now close to joining Barcelona in a separate transfer. Reports have also mentioned Viktor Gyökeres, but Arsenal are reluctant to lose their new striker.
The final decision therefore rests largely with Álvarez. Atlético are open to negotiating with Arsenal, but the forward must first decide whether he is willing to move to England. If he refuses, the most likely outcome is that he remains at the Metropolitano until at least the January transfer window.
For now, Álvarez has returned to training, but the relationship between the player and Atlético remains strained. The club want to protect their position, while the striker continues to seek a move to Barcelona.
With the deadline approaching, a late transfer remains possible but far from certain. Unless Álvarez changes his preference or Barcelona significantly alters its position, the Argentine forward is likely to stay in Madrid and attempt to rebuild his relationship with Atlético.
