Mathias Jaissle’s decision to use Yoane Wissa as a No. 10 proved highly effective during Newcastle United’s dramatic 2–2 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Wissa operated behind Will Osula, regularly finding space between Liverpool’s midfield and defense. His movement helped Newcastle progress the ball through central areas, while his energy allowed him to contribute both in possession and defensively. The forward was named player of the match after registering an assist for Joe Willock’s second-half goal and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles.

Wissa later moved into a central striker role after Osula was forced off with a knock. Although he missed two excellent chances to put Newcastle in control, his overall performance impressed Jaissle and suggested that the Belgian-born DR Congo international could have an important role in the manager’s system this season.

Newcastle led twice during the match. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring before Liverpool equalized, and Willock restored the hosts’ advantage with a superb finish. However, Dominik Szoboszlai converted a late penalty to secure a point for Liverpool after Lewis Hall brought down Víctor Muñoz.

Wissa said he is comfortable playing in the deeper role and believes he can contribute from several attacking positions. His versatility gives Jaissle greater flexibility, particularly when Newcastle face opponents who defend with a compact midfield.

The draw denied Newcastle victory in Jaissle’s first Premier League match, but the performance offered encouragement. Wissa’s adaptation to the No. 10 position could become one of the key tactical developments of Newcastle’s season.
