Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has clarified his decision to leave Enzo Fernandez out of the matchday squad for the club’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town, insisting the selection choice was strictly tactical. The Argentine international was a notable absentee from the team sheet, sparking renewed discussion around his immediate standing at Stamford Bridge. Alonso explained that the midweek fixture provided a necessary opportunity to distribute competitive minutes to other members of the squad. Dismissing speculation regarding the player’s commitment, Alonso stated that Fernandez remains a dedicated professional who continues to train effectively with the group, adding that squad management dictated the choices made for the match.
The midfielder’s absence against Luton coincides with persistent transfer attention from Manchester City. Chelsea are prepared to sell the 25-year-old to the Premier League champions for the right price, provided suitable additions can be made to strengthen the squad before the deadline. While Manchester City missed an initial August 14 deadline previously set by Chelsea for a formal bid, interest from the Etihad Stadium remains active. Direct club-to-club negotiations haven’t yet taken place between the two teams, and Fernandez previously featured in Chelsea’s Premier League opening fixture against Fulham.
Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a £107 million fee, representing one of the highest-profile midfielder transfers in English football history. Since taking charge at Stamford Bridge following his departure from Real Madrid in January, Alonso has publicly acknowledged Fernandez’s importance within the playing group. The recent squad rotation follows an earlier disciplinary incident under former head coach Liam Rosenior. Fernandez was previously dropped for two Chelsea matches—including a 7-0 victory against Port Vale—following comments regarding his future and prospective links to Real Madrid. Both Fernandez and his agent, Javier Pastore, issued formal apologies to resolve the sanction. Additionally, Fernandez received a mixed reaction from portions of the Stamford Bridge crowd during a preseason friendly against Real Sociedad, where he took over the captain’s armband from James after entering as a 62nd-minute substitute.
