West Ham United returned to the top of the Championship with a record-breaking 6–0 demolition of Wrexham at the London Stadium, inflicting the Welsh club’s heaviest defeat since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney assumed ownership in 2021. Six different players scored as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side claimed a fourth straight league win and moved to 14 points from six matches.
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring in the 28th minute, arriving at the far post to finish Manor Solomon’s cross. Joël Piroe doubled the lead eight minutes before half-time after Valentín Castellanos drove into the penalty area and found him for a first-time finish. Wrexham had competed reasonably for the opening 25 minutes and could have changed the rhythm of the match when George Dobson’s effort was cleared from the goal line by Konstantinos Mavropanos, but West Ham’s clinical edge soon decided the contest.
Mavropanos headed in Bowen’s corner three minutes after the interval to make it 3–0, effectively ending Wrexham’s resistance. Castellanos added the fourth in the 63rd minute after Kyle Walker-Peters carried the ball forward, substitute Mohamadou Kanté made it five in the 76th after being released by Solomon, and Solomon completed the rout six minutes later.
The result was witnessed by 59,712 spectators, the largest attendance ever for a match involving Wrexham. It surpassed the previous record of 54,096, set when Wrexham played Liverpool at Anfield in an FA Cup tie in January 1970.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson accepted responsibility for the scale of the defeat. “A very tough night for us,” he said. “As a manager you always look at yourself and we’ll do that. The first 25 minutes I thought we were OK. The first two goals were really soft from our point of view; I felt we could’ve prevented them with better defending.”
Parkinson acknowledged West Ham’s quality but said his players had lost their way after conceding twice. “They’ve got very good players and if you don’t defend properly they’re a team who will punish,” he said. “They were absolutely clinical but we could’ve done better.”
For West Ham, the performance was a major statement after an uneven start to life back in the second tier. The Hammers have now scored 16 goals during their four-match winning run, and the attacking combination of Bowen, Piroe, Castellanos and Solomon gave an emphatic demonstration of why they are among the leading candidates for automatic promotion.
For Wrexham, the occasion became a sobering reminder of the Championship’s level. Their sole significant chance came when Dobson was denied by Mavropanos’ goal-line clearance at 1–0; otherwise, they managed only one shot on target and were overwhelmed after half-time. The immediate task for Parkinson is to restore defensive basics and confidence before the defeat leaves a longer mark on their season.
