Thomas Tuchel has recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer to the England squad for the opening UEFA Nations League fixtures of the new campaign, while Harry Maguire has again been left out.
Alexander-Arnold, who was omitted from England’s World Cup squad, returns after a positive start to the season with Real Madrid. Tuchel said the 27-year-old has an opportunity to establish himself again at right-back but made clear that defensive responsibility will be central to his case.
“It’s an opportunity for Trent,” Tuchel said. “He had a good start to the season. He started some matches for Real Madrid and good results. We’re happy to have him back.”
Asked whether Alexander-Arnold must prove that he can defend at the required level, Tuchel was unequivocal: “He has to, it’s necessary. My conviction is that he will, but he has no choice.”
The England head coach also confirmed that Alexander-Arnold has been selected as a right-back, rather than as a midfielder. His passing range and attacking qualities remain unquestioned, but Tuchel’s comments indicate that his defensive work will be closely assessed during the four-match camp.
Palmer earns recall
Palmer also returns following an injury-affected previous season and an improved opening to the new campaign at Chelsea. Tuchel highlighted the forward’s consistent club role, output and ability to influence matches.
“Cole starts every game for Chelsea—he’s a regular starter, he decides matches, he has his numbers back in his game,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel rejected the suggestion that the recalls amounted to an admission that he was wrong to omit Alexander-Arnold and Palmer from the World Cup. Instead, he said the pair had been selected because England wanted to see their quality again and give them the opportunity to perform.
Maguire remains out
Maguire is not in the latest squad after missing the World Cup. The Manchester United defender publicly described himself as “shocked and gutted” when he was overlooked for the tournament, a response that Tuchel acknowledged he did not appreciate.
“I will not hold it against him for the rest of his life because I’m not that type of person,” Tuchel said. “I can forget easily and quickly. But I didn’t like it and it doesn’t help.”
That leaves the door open in principle rather than definitively ending Maguire’s international prospects. However, his absence means he faces a difficult route back, particularly with Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, Trevoh Chalobah, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jarrell Quansah among the defenders selected.
Squad changes
Tuchel made substantial changes to the group he took to the World Cup, with reports describing eight or nine alterations depending on the comparison used. Alongside Alexander-Arnold and Palmer, the manager included players such as Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Gibbs-White, Alex Scott and Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha.
England’s Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia offer Alexander-Arnold a meaningful chance to make his case—but not necessarily a final verdict on his long-term international future.
