Newcastle United secured their first Premier League victory under manager Matthias Jaissle with a 2–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result gave Spurs a second consecutive league defeat and left Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point or a goal from their opening two matches.
The first half was goalless, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper Lukas Horníček made several important saves to preserve the deadlock. Tottenham created promising openings through Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel, yet they lacked the finishing required to turn their pressure into a lead.
Newcastle eventually broke through in the 62nd minute. Debutant Nico González started the move with an excellent cross-field pass to Amar Dedić, who headed the ball into Anthony Elanga’s path. Elanga turned away from former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali before sending a left-footed shot inside the far post. It was his second Premier League goal in as many matches after he also scored against Liverpool.
The visitors doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. Nick Woltemade headed a corner toward Yoane Wissa, who reacted quickly and hooked the ball into the net with an acrobatic finish. Wissa’s goal ended Tottenham’s hopes of recovering and gave Jaissle his first Premier League win as Newcastle head coach.
Newcastle’s success was based on disciplined defensive organisation and efficient attacking transitions. Tottenham enjoyed periods of possession and attempted to build through the midfield, but Newcastle consistently closed the central spaces and forced the hosts to attack from less dangerous positions.
González was especially influential on his debut. Although he was booked early in the match, his 30-yard pass created the opening goal and immediately demonstrated the range he can offer Newcastle’s midfield. Dedić also played an important role, advancing on the right before directing his header into Elanga’s running path.
Tottenham’s expensive summer recruitment failed to produce an immediate response. Their squad included several major additions, including Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Omar Marmoush and Tonali, but the team struggled to turn individual quality into coherent attacking play. Savio was unavailable after experiencing muscle fatigue during the midweek Carabao Cup match, further reducing Spurs’ direct threat.
The defeat extends Tottenham’s difficult record at home. De Zerbi’s side now face early pressure to improve both their chance creation and defensive concentration, especially after spending heavily during the transfer window. Their inability to score in either of their opening league fixtures is an immediate concern.
Newcastle, by contrast, can take confidence from a complete away performance. Despite losing key players during the summer, including Bruno Guimarães and Anthony Gordon, the Magpies showed resilience and attacking efficiency when the match opened up after halftime.
The result leaves Newcastle with four points from their first two games, while Tottenham remain at the bottom of the Premier League table. Jaissle has now secured his first league victory, whereas De Zerbi must quickly find solutions if Spurs are to turn their significant investment into results.
