Sunderland have completed the club-record signing of Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Olympique Lyonnais after one of the summer’s most dramatic transfer deadline-day sagas. The 21-year-old has signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland agreeing an initial fee of around £25.7 million that could rise to approximately £30.8 million through add-ons.
Fofana is one of several major additions in Régis Le Bris’s summer rebuild as Sunderland seek to add quality, pace and attacking depth to their squad. The winger arrives after a breakthrough period at Lyon, where he scored 11 goals in 59 appearances following his 2024 move from Belgian side Gent. He is capable of playing across the front line and offers Sunderland a direct, creative option in wide areas.
The deal was settled only after a remarkable late contest with Crystal Palace. Sunderland had reached an agreement with Lyon and arranged a five-year contract for Fofana, but Palace launched a deadline-day attempt to hijack the transfer. Palace manager Pierre Sage, who previously coached Fofana at Lyon, contacted the player as the Eagles looked for an alternative after their pursuit of Marseille forward Igor Paixão stalled. Arsenal had also monitored Fofana earlier in the window but did not make a formal bid.
Both Sunderland and Crystal Palace sent private jets to Lyon airport while Fofana considered his options. The player attended a medical at a private hospital in France, with both clubs seeking to complete a deal, before Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus travelled to Lyon to make the club’s case in person. Fofana ultimately chose Sunderland and the Black Cats submitted a deal sheet before the English transfer deadline, allowing them additional time to complete the formalities.
Fofana’s arrival is a clear statement of Sunderland’s ambition. While his availability for the next fixture remains subject to international clearance and registration, the Belgian winger gives Le Bris another high-level attacking option as the club begins its Premier League campaign.
