Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and 2026 World Cup standout, was signed for a fee reported between €60 million and €76.5 million after choosing Barcelona over Real Madrid. Flick has made clear that the Spaniard’s strength is to sit just ahead of the defence, control the central zone and set the tempo, which in turn frees players like Pedri, Fermín López, Dani Olmo, Gavi and Marc Bernal to act as attacking interiors.
Pedri’s role has changed most visibly. With Rodri anchoring, Pedri no longer needs to drop as deep to collect the ball; instead he is making more frequent runs into the box and appearing in advanced finishing areas, a pattern that has drawn comparisons to Andrés Iniesta’s influence in Barcelona’s peak years. Observers have noted that when Rodri is substituted, Pedri instinctively drops deeper to help with distribution, suggesting the two are already developing a complementary rhythm.
Flick has stressed that Rodri brings control and leadership rather than simply more passing volume. “Everything Rodri does has a purpose,” Flick said after Rodri’s first start in the 5–0 win over Valencia. “He is incredible, not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room.
