Nigeria’s Flamingos have arrived in Morocco with a clear objective: to end their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign on a high note. The team, led by captain Harmony Chidi, will open their tournament on Saturday with a fixture against Poland at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat. This opener marks the beginning of a grueling Group B schedule, where the Flamingos will also face Puerto Rico and two-time defending champions Korea DPR.
Head coach Akeem Busari has assembled a 21-player squad designed to balance youthful energy with tactical maturity. The lineup includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, five midfielders, and six forwards, reflecting a deliberate structure to adapt to the tournament’s physical and technical demands. Chidi, who has already proven her scoring prowess—netting five goals in qualifying and three more in the WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Championship—will be a focal point. Her leadership and goal threat will be critical as Nigeria seeks to secure a positive result against Poland, their first test in Morocco.
The tournament’s intensity is underscored by the Flamingos’ draw in Group B, a group that includes a powerhouse in Korea DPR and a competitive side in Poland. Nigeria’s path to the knockout stages will require consistency, particularly in their final group match against Korea DPR on October 23. The team’s preparation in Casablanca has focused on tactical refinement and acclimatization, with Busari’s staff ensuring the squad is ready for the demands of the competition.
With the World Cup running from October 17 to November 7, the Flamingos will need to capitalize on early momentum. Their journey to Morocco was secured after defeating Benin Republic in the final qualifying round, but the real challenge lies ahead. The next three days before their opener will be pivotal as the team fine-tunes its approach, knowing that a strong start against Poland could set the tone for the entire tournament.
