Newcastle United have opened exploratory talks over a possible move for Manchester City midfielder Nico González as the club seek to rebuild following a summer of high-profile departures. The 24-year-old Spain international has emerged as a possible target after Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and captain Bruno Guimarães, leaving a significant gap in the centre of their midfield.
Guimarães completed a £75 million move to Arsenal earlier in August, having been Newcastle’s captain and one of their most influential players. Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal reported to be worth up to £100 million, while Gordon also departed during a period of major change at St James’ Park. Newcastle have raised close to £170 million through sales, according to reporting in July, although the exact total may have changed since then.
González joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 in a deal reported at approximately £50 million. He made 41 appearances in all competitions during the 2025–26 season, but started only two Premier League matches in 2026 and came off the bench in Manchester City’s 3–0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on 16 August.
City’s midfield plans could influence González’s situation. The club have been linked with Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández, having already signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. With City also seeking to reshape their midfield after Tijjani Reijnders’s £52 million move to Al-Qadsiah, González could face increased competition for places.
For Newcastle, González would offer Premier League experience and the profile of a holding or controlling midfielder. He is primarily a defensive midfielder and has already spent around 18 months in English football, which may make him a more immediate option than a younger, untested replacement.
Newcastle have also been linked with Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane. Interest in the teenager has been reported, but he should be described as a monitored option rather than a confirmed late-window priority. Claims that Newcastle’s interest has intensified because of a specific William Osula injury, or that the club deliberately withheld Nick Woltemade during a match against Liverpool, require stronger sourcing before publication.
