Newcastle Complete £50m Transfer for Manchester City Midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Nico González from Manchester City. The 24-year-old Spaniard was presented to supporters at St James’ Park before Newcastle’s Carabao Cup match against West Bromwich Albion and will wear the No. 6 shirt.

The transfer is reportedly worth up to £52 million, with Newcastle paying an initial £48 million and a further £4 million potentially due in add-ons. The move makes González Newcastle’s seventh senior signing of the summer.

González came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before joining Manchester City from Porto in January 2025. He made 59 appearances for City and scored four goals during his 18-month spell at the club.

His playing time became more limited during the second half of last season, and he has now chosen to continue his career under Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle. The manager praised González’s ball-carrying ability, defensive discipline, physicality and composure under pressure.

The move represents a significant addition to Newcastle’s midfield. González gives Jaissle another technically gifted option who can carry the ball forward while also contributing defensively.

“I’m very happy to be here,” González said after completing the transfer. “I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch.”

Newcastle’s seventh summer signing further underlines the club’s ambition under Jaissle. González will now compete for a place in the starting lineup as the Magpies continue their campaign on several fronts.
