Nottingham Forest have secured Neco Williams’ long-term future, with the Wales international signing a contract extension that will keep him at the City Ground until the summer of 2030. The 25-year-old full-back has become an important part of Forest’s defensive structure since joining from Liverpool in 2022.
Williams has made more than 160 appearances for Forest and enjoyed an outstanding 2025–26 campaign. He featured 63 times for club and country, including 15 of Forest’s 16 Europa League matches as the club reached the semi-finals. His performances also earned him the supporters’ Player of the Season award.
The new agreement comes after interest from several Premier League clubs. Manchester United and Newcastle United had registered their interest in the full-back, while Aston Villa and Everton were also monitoring his situation. Forest’s decision to extend Williams’ contract removes the possibility of an immediate transfer and protects one of the club’s most established defensive players.
Williams’ versatility has made him particularly valuable. He can operate on either side of the defence and offers energy when advancing from full-back, while his defensive work allows Forest to maintain flexibility in their shape. His experience with Wales and in European competition has also added to his importance within the squad.
Forest have continued to strengthen their defensive options during the same period. The club signed Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for a reported £34.3 million, with the defender agreeing to a four-year contract. Diomande’s arrival gives Forest greater depth in central defence and complements the decision to retain Williams.
The club’s wider transfer strategy has involved balancing new investment with the protection of existing talent. Williams’ previous contract had been due to run until 2029 after an extension signed in 2025, but Forest moved quickly to improve those terms and add another year to his commitment.
The decision is also significant because Forest have faced increased competition for their best players. Nottingham Forest recently sold Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £116 million, and the club have had to demonstrate that they can retain important members of the squad while continuing to recruit ambitious additions.
Williams’ new contract provides continuity at full-back during a period of sustained competition in the Premier League. He has already faced demanding individual battles against leading attackers and midfielders, including Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, and will remain central to Forest’s defensive plans.
The extension keeps Williams at the club through the prime years of his career and gives Forest a reliable foundation on which to build. His immediate future is now settled, allowing the full-back to concentrate on maintaining the form that established him as one of the most trusted players in the squad.
