Mikel Merino Sees Striking Yamal Parallels in Arsenal Wonderkid Max Dowman

Mikel Merino has lauded Arsenal teenager Max Dowman as a special talent, drawing direct comparisons between the 16-year-old sensation and Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal. Dowman announced himself on the senior stage with an exhilarating two-goal and one-assist performance in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup third-round triumph away at Ipswich Town. Scoring the Gunners’ third goal during the victory at Portman Road, the youngster demonstrated a composure well beyond his years, becoming only the second 16-year-old to score twice for a Premier League side since Wayne Rooney achieved the feat for Everton against Wrexham in 2002.

Having shared a dressing room with Yamal during Spain’s international triumphs at Euro 2024 and the World Cup, Merino recognizes the distinct psychological parallels between the two prodigies. The experienced Spanish midfielder pointed directly to Dowman’s fearless demeanor when competing against senior professionals. They don’t care about the spotlight, they thrive when pressure is at the highest, they are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all – even facing the biggest names in the game, so they are very similar, Merino explained. Honestly, he is an unbelievable talent. We knew it, but every time he goes on the pitch and plays against grown men – even being 16 or 17 – he makes the difference.

Despite the burgeoning excitement around the academy graduate, Merino stressed the necessity of keeping the teenager grounded as Mikel Arteta integrates him into Arsenal’s squad. While Yamal carved out a permanent starting role at Barcelona at age 16, Dowman has needed to remain patient amidst the attacking depth available at the Emirates Stadium. The good thing with these kind of players – Lamine and Max – is that they are special talents, but at the same time they are very humble, Merino said. They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless. So, we are very happy to have him, but at the same time he knows that we are here to help him and sometimes even if we push him a little bit, he knows it’s for his own good.

As Arsenal advance into the Carabao Cup fourth round, protecting Dowman’s growth while allowing his raw instinct to flourish remains a collective priority for the senior players and coaching staff. Merino emphasized that while Dowman’s talent commands attention, shielding him from excess external pressure is essential. Obviously you want Max to shine and you want him to express himself and show everyone the talent that he has, but, at the same time, you have to sometimes remind them that they are human beings and they are part of a bigger squad and team, Merino added, confirming the squad will support the young prospect every step of his development.
