Michael Carrick faces an early defensive concern at Manchester United after his side conceded twice late in a 2–2 draw with Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium. United have now allowed six goals in their opening three Premier League matches, and their inability to protect leads cost them two points on Merseyside.
United had put themselves in a strong position twice. Bryan Mbeumo gave the visitors the lead early in the second half, but Tyrique George levelled for Everton with a powerful long-range effort in the 83rd minute. Substitute Benjamin Sesko appeared to have secured the win when he restored United’s advantage in the 88th minute, only for Ainsley Maitland-Niles to curl in a 96th-minute equaliser on his Everton debut.
Carrick was understandably frustrated, describing the outcome as one that “feels like a defeat” after United had been so close to victory. He accepted that the team must concede fewer goals to improve its prospects, while also stressing that there were positive elements in United’s attacking play and that the season’s opening weeks have not been wholly negative.
The result leaves United with one win, one draw and one defeat from their first three league matches, placing them 11th in the table. The pattern is nevertheless clear: Carrick’s side have scored enough to compete, but have not yet shown the control or game management required to turn promising positions into consistent victories.
The current personnel offer Carrick options as he seeks greater balance. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans started together in midfield at Everton, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven were among the defensive alternatives on the bench. Any decisions over rotation or selection, however, should be viewed as tactical choices rather than evidence that either young centre-back is about to displace the established starters.
Marcus Rashford’s substitution also merits monitoring. The forward was replaced in the 70th minute after reporting discomfort, and Carrick said the change was precautionary. United will need clarity on Rashford’s condition as they enter a condensed run that includes four games in 11 days.
Elsewhere, Arsenal’s 2–1 victory over Chelsea offered a useful example of the composure required at the top end of the Premier League. Chelsea led early through Morgan Rogers, but Arsenal recovered through effective right-sided attacks before Martin Ødegaard scored the winner; Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly were deployed as a central-midfield partnership.
