Manchester United have rejected a request from academy prospect JJ Gabriel to cancel his registration with the club, but the 15-year-old’s future remains uncertain amid interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Gabriel formally asked Manchester United to deregister him with immediate effect, a move that would allow him to become a free agent. United have refused the request and are attempting to persuade the highly rated forward that his best development pathway remains at Old Trafford.
The teenager is reported to have travelled to Barcelona for talks over a potential move. Barcelona are among the clubs interested in Gabriel, while Real Madrid are also understood to be making a strong effort to sign him and want to place him in their Castilla reserve setup.
Gabriel’s current registration with Manchester United runs until the end of the season. The club’s refusal to deregister him means he cannot simply join another English club, although the rules surrounding a possible move abroad are more complex.
The key date is October 6, when Gabriel turns 16. Because he is eligible for an Irish passport through his father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill, and may also be eligible for Cypriot citizenship through his mother, he could qualify as a European Union citizen.
If Gabriel has or obtains an EU passport, he could seek FIFA approval to join a club within the European Economic Area after his 16th birthday. However, any such transfer would not be automatic, and Manchester United are exploring whether they can challenge a move under FIFA and Premier League regulations.
United remain determined to retain the player, who is widely considered one of the country’s leading prospects in his age group. The club has held discussions with Gabriel and his family in an effort to resolve the situation, but his visit to Barcelona suggests his representatives are actively considering options outside England.
The coming weeks will be crucial. Manchester United have not abandoned hope of keeping Gabriel, but Barcelona’s interest, Real Madrid’s pursuit and the possible availability of an EU passport mean the teenager’s future could be decided soon after his 16th birthday.
