Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel has formally requested the cancellation of his registration with the club, placing the future of one of English football’s most highly rated young players in doubt.
The 15-year-old forward had been due to be involved in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, where he could have become the club’s youngest-ever first-team player. However, Gabriel was not considered for selection after submitting a request to leave Old Trafford.
Gabriel and his representatives sent formal notice asking for his academy registration to be cancelled with immediate effect, which would allow him to become a free agent. Manchester United have been shocked by the request but believe the situation can still be resolved.
The teenager is registered with United until the end of the 2026–27 season. Under Premier League rules, a youth registration can only be cancelled if the player, a parent or carer, and the club all agree. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Premier League can make a binding decision.
Gabriel did not train with Michael Carrick’s first-team group in the days before the Brighton match. Reports indicate that tension has developed between the player’s family and Manchester United, although neither party has publicly explained the reasons for the dispute.
United remain hopeful that Gabriel can be persuaded to stay. The club views him as one of its leading academy talents, and officials have continued talks with the player and his representatives in an effort to find a resolution.
Gabriel became the youngest-ever recipient of Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season. He also won the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season prize after scoring 23 league goals.
Across all age groups last season, Gabriel scored 26 goals in 29 appearances and has continued his rapid rise this term. He scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League and has registered two goals and two assists in two Premier League 2 appearances.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are among the European clubs understood to be monitoring Gabriel’s situation. The forward turns 16 on October 6, when he becomes eligible to sign a scholarship agreement, although any move abroad would remain subject to relevant registration and international-transfer regulations.
