Manchester United have formally entered the race for a Croatia international striker currently playing in the Bundesliga, setting up a high-stakes January transfer window battle with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Head coach Michael Carrick is actively seeking to sharpen his team’s attacking edge, and United have made an official enquiry for the goalscorer. However, Tottenham have already launched their own attempt to secure the Croatian forward, ensuring a fierce recruitment contest between the two English clubs ahead of the mid-season deadline.
Beyond their efforts to bolster the frontline, Manchester United’s recruitment strategy under Carrick is moving swiftly across multiple positions. Old Trafford decision-makers have internally approved a deal to sign defender Lewis Hall. Newcastle United are determined to make life difficult for the Red Devils in their pursuit of Hall, forcing Carrick to prepare contingencies. The United head coach has already approved an alternative move for Jorge Salinas should the club fail to finalise terms for Hall.
Tottenham’s pursuit of the Croatian Bundesliga star comes during a period of significant financial manoeuvring in North London. Spurs have established themselves as one of the Premier League’s most efficient sellers in recent windows, generating substantial transfer capital to re-invest into the squad. That war chest was boosted by demanding a club-record fee for Luka Vušković, alongside high-value departures including Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, and a £75m fee received for Savinho. Those sales have provided Spurs with formidable financial muscle as they go head-to-head with United.
This mid-season transfer battle takes place against a broader backdrop of intense spending across the Premier League. Newcastle United have overseen massive squad turnover, spending £268.46m against £239.39m in sales for a net spend of £29.07m, with Nico González arriving as their latest addition. Arsenal have posted a net spend of £172.65m after bringing in £189.25m worth of talent—headlined by Bruno Guimarães for £75m and Ezri Konsa for £51m—while breaking their record sale mark by departing with Gabriel Martinelli for £60m. Fulham have recorded a net spend of £70.25m as Álvaro Arbeloa takes over from Marco Silva, while Brighton hold a positive £10.36m net spend from £164.81m in total sales. As established Premier League figures like Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk are widely expected to eventually transition into managerial roles, the upcoming January window promises to reshape squad depth across the top flight.
