Laporta Slams Atletico in Standoff Over Julian Alvarez

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has launched a scathing critique of Atlético Madrid, accusing the club of acting with “no way to justify” stubbornness in their refusal to transfer Julián Alvarez this summer. The Argentine forward was the crown jewel of Barcelona’s transfer wishlist, with a €100 million bid reportedly tabled in May. Despite the Catalan club’s intense pressure and Alvarez’s own public plea to join Atlético’s rivals, the Madrid giants stood resolute, refusing to bend to the demand.

The standoff has drawn sharp criticism from within the Camp Nou, with Barcelona captain Raphinha speaking out forcefully on the situation. Raphinha argued that forcing an unhappy player to remain at a club only breeds instability, stating that individual discomfort inevitably impacts collective performance. “I don’t understand what Atletico has done because if a player is uncomfortable somewhere, and I’m speaking personally, it’s difficult for things to go well,” Raphinha noted, emphasizing that Alvarez had made his desire to leave abundantly clear.

Barcelona’s transfer strategy was built on an uncompromising premise: land Alvarez or sign no one. The club’s hierarchy evaluated potential alternative center-forwards but ultimately concluded that none of the available options justified abandoning their primary objective. This all-or-nothing approach now faces a critical test as the window advances, leaving the squad thin in a key department without a viable Plan B.

In response, Atlético Madrid has delivered a firm warning, with the board unanimously backing the decision to block any deal with their La Liga rivals. The club is reportedly holding out for a fee closer to €150 million, a figure that Barcelona is believed to be financially incapable of meeting at this stage. Arsenal has actively pursued the forward, with positive talks held, though Atlético reportedly prefers to conduct business with Premier League clubs rather than direct domestic competitors.

Despite the acrimony, Alvarez has demonstrated a renewed sense of focus and physical sharpness during recent training sessions in Majadahonda. Following the Athletic Bilbao match, the forward was seen executing dynamic drills, dropping deep to link play, and scoring a brilliant goal during tactical exercises. He spent extra time working with a fitness coach while teammates cheered him on, signaling a gradual return to form and full physical recovery as he looks to put the transfer saga behind him.
