Jérémy Jacquet impresses for Liverpool and France after summer arrival

Jérémy Jacquet has made an encouraging start to his Liverpool career, earning senior international recognition with France and praise from national-team coach Zinedine Zidane. The 21-year-old centre-back was ever-present for Liverpool before the international break and received a nomination for September’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

Liverpool completed his transfer from Rennes on 1 July after agreeing the move earlier in the year. The reported deal comprised an initial £55 million fee and a further £5 million in performance-related add-ons. Jacquet signed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year.

His club performances were followed by a senior France debut in a 1–0 victory over Belgium. Four days later, he played the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 Nations League draw against Italy, earning his second cap and another positive assessment from Zidane.

“Very good. Very, very good. Brave,” Zidane said. “He wasn’t afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times.” The comments highlighted Jacquet’s willingness to step forward from defence and compete assertively against experienced international opposition.

That combination of regular club involvement and immediate international recognition provides concrete evidence of a promising opening to his Liverpool career. It is a firmer basis for assessing the signing than declaring him the club’s sole successful addition or using his form to infer weaknesses elsewhere in the squad.

Any discussion of Liverpool’s January plans should remain separate from that assessment unless supported by identifiable transfer reporting. Jacquet’s emergence is already a substantial story: a young defender arriving from Rennes, establishing himself early at Anfield and earning the confidence of France’s coach. Whether Liverpool need further recruitment requires a broader assessment than this evidence alone permits.
