James Milner has officially returned to Liverpool, stepping onto the pitches at the Kirkby Academy to take up a temporary coaching role working with the club’s younger age groups. The 40-year-old former England international called time on his playing career at the end of June following the expiration of his contract at Brighton, bringing down the curtain on an extraordinary 24-year spell in top-flight football. Academy director Alex Inglethorpe extended the invitation as Milner actively works toward securing his UEFA Pro Licence, offering the veteran an immediate pathway into coaching at the elite level.
Milner’s move back to Merseyside follows a record-breaking final season in the Premier League. Having equaled Gareth Barry’s long-standing mark of 653 appearances, he took sole possession of the all-time appearance record in February and eventually finished his career with 658 top-flight matches. His 24th and final season concluded in May against Manchester United, wrapping up a final stint with Brighton where he registered 20 appearances across the 2025/26 campaign and helped the Seagulls qualify for Europe for the second time in their history.
This isn’t Milner’s first foray into player development. He frequently assisted at Liverpool’s academy during his eight-year playing spell at Anfield and gained further valuable touchline experience under head coach Fabian Hurzeler at Brighton. His overall playing career spanned six Premier League clubs—Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton. Across a decorated 13-year period split between City and Liverpool, Milner collected three Premier League winner’s medals (2011-12 and 2013-14 with City; 2019-20 with Liverpool) alongside a Champions League title during his iconic stay on Merseyside.
Reflecting on a journey that began back in 2002 when he made his debut for boyhood club Leeds United against West Ham at 16 years and 309 days, Milner noted that he could never have envisioned the path ahead, from becoming the league’s youngest scorer to overcoming a severe foot issue late in his career. While former teammate Thiago Alcantara’s potential return to the club in a staff capacity remains on hold due to pending coaching badge requirements, Milner arrives with credentials already in motion as Andoni Iraola begins a new era at Anfield after replacing Arne Slot. Inglethorpe’s academy setup now gains an unmatched depth of premier experience on the training pitch.
