The long-standing pursuit between Manchester United and Benjamin Šeško has finally culminated in his arrival at Old Trafford, bringing an end to a seven-year recruitment effort. United’s interest in the Slovenian international dates back to his time as a 16-year-old in NK Domžale’s youth ranks, well before he had even made his debut in senior Slovenian football. Raised idolizing Zlatan Ibrahimović—who had departed Old Trafford just a year before United first scouted the teenager—Šeško held a deep affinity for English football. Despite competing interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United, his focus remained fixed on Old Trafford.
Despite United’s initial approach during his youth, Šeško and his representative Elvis Bašanović took a deliberate, long-term approach to his career path. Recognizing the steep jump required to move directly from Slovenian youth football to the Premier League, they elected to turn down the giant’s early advance. Šeško built his foundation in Austria before moving to RB Leipzig to refine his tactical and physical attributes. Reflecting on that patient trajectory, Šeško explained that jumping straight from Slovenia or Austria to Manchester United would have been too large a leap, emphasizing that those intermediary steps were essential to elevate his game to the required standard.
When contract discussions eventually reached a decisive stage, financial concessions proved pivotal in securing the transfer. Faced with competing offers across Europe, Šeško demonstrated his commitment by accepting a reduced salary package, while Bašanović agreed to take a lower commission fee to ensure the move went through. Bašanović noted that while numerous variables typically complicate high-profile transfers, Šeško’s singular ambition to wear the United shirt simplified the negotiation process. The agent confirmed that playing for Manchester United had always been the player’s primary goal, making those financial sacrifices an easy choice for their team.
Within Old Trafford, securing Šeško represents the completion of a long-term scouting target, even as key internal figures previously questioned whether finalizing a deal was realistic. By bringing in a striker who deliberately constructed his career through steady steps across European football rather than rushing into a high-pressure environment early, United have landed a target identified almost a decade ago. For Šeško, stepping onto the pitch at Old Trafford marks the realization of a teenage ambition and the start of a major chapter in England.
