Structural issues extended to United’s backline, where defensive vulnerabilities along the left flank were repeatedly exposed. The performance highlighted an urgent requirement for Carrick to recruit a natural, high-caliber left-back before the transfer window shuts in roughly ten days. Pre-season friendly momentum didn’t translate to competitive football, leaving United’s defensive structure disorganized when forced to defend set routines.
Widely predicted to finish bottom of the table in their first top-flight campaign since 2017, Hull showed the defensive discipline required to compete at this level. Jakirovic’s side now prepares for a midweek EFL Cup fixture against Stoke City, while Carrick is left needing fast answers to fix United’s tactical balance before their next league outing.
