Glentoran’s Uefa Conference League campaign is over, and it’s a bitter pill to swallow – they’ve been knocked out by Latvian side RFS, losing 4-1 on aggregate. The Northern Irish team’s hopes of progressing to the next round were dashed in Riga, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat in the second leg. Trailing 2-1 from last week’s first leg, Glentoran needed a strong performance to turn the tie around, but it didn’t materialize. Yet, as the final whistle blew, it was clear that RFS were the better team, and they deserved their place in the next round.
The atmosphere in Riga was electric, with the RFS fans creating a cauldron of noise that made life difficult for the Glentoran players. And, to be honest, it showed – Glentoran looked nervous and unsure of themselves, rarely able to string together more than a few passes without losing possession. But, in fairness to them, they didn’t give up – they kept pushing forward, searching for that elusive goal that would get them back into the tie. It’s just a shame it didn’t come, because what we’ve seen from Glentoran this season suggests they’ve got the talent and the determination to compete at this level. Long considered one of the top teams in Northern Ireland, Glentoran’s fans will be disappointed, but they won’t be too disheartened – after all, this is a team that’s been through tough times before.
RFS, on the other hand, are on cloud nine – they’ve achieved what many thought impossible, knocking out a team with Glentoran’s reputation and experience. And they’ve done it in style, too, with some impressive performances from their players. It’s a testament to the strength of the Latvian league, which rarely gets the recognition it deserves. But, as RFS progress to the next round, they’ll be aware that the competition will only get tougher – they’ll need to be at the top of their game if they’re to keep their Uefa Conference League campaign alive. As for Glentoran, they’ll have to regroup and refocus – they’ve got a long season ahead of them, and they won’t want this defeat to define their year. (And who knows, maybe they’ll be back in European competition sooner rather than later – stranger things have happened, right?)
