Gary Neville Slams Handling of JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United Exit as Barcelona Interest Grows

Manchester United are dealing with uncertainty surrounding the future of highly rated 15-year-old academy forward JJ Gabriel. Gabriel has reportedly asked to leave the club, while several major European teams—including Barcelona and Real Madrid—have been linked with the teenager. He has also reportedly travelled to Barcelona for talks, although no transfer has been confirmed.

Former Manchester United defender and football pundit Gary Neville has strongly criticized the way the situation was handled. Neville said he could not judge whether Gabriel was ready for a place in the first team because he had not seen enough of the youngster’s development. However, he questioned why the player’s representatives allowed the story to become public immediately after United’s derby defeat.
Neville argued that the public announcement had placed unnecessary pressure on a 15-year-old player.

“I just don’t see the logic from any representatives of a 15-year-old boy who think it’s a good idea to put his name in lights right now,” Neville said.

He suggested that Gabriel’s representatives should have tried to calm the situation rather than make it public. Neville also pointed to Arsenal’s handling of young prospects, noting that the club has previously protected emerging players from excessive media attention. He argued that Manchester United had traditionally followed a similar approach to youth development.

Neville’s comments focused less on whether Gabriel should be playing first-team football and more on the duty of care owed to a player of his age. He questioned why the representatives would choose to publicize the dispute rather than wait for a calmer period, such as the upcoming international break.
The situation is complicated by registration rules. Gabriel has reportedly asked Manchester United to cancel his registration with immediate effect, but the club has indicated that it does not accept the request. His current arrangement is understood to run until the end of the season.

Because Gabriel holds an Irish passport, reports suggest he could potentially move to a European club after turning 16, subject to the relevant regulations and approvals. That has increased interest from clubs outside England, with Barcelona and Real Madrid among those linked with the forward.

Despite the uncertainty, the episode does not alter Manchester United’s broader commitment to academy development. The club has continued to promote young players into its first team, even during difficult periods on the pitch. United will now hope to resolve Gabriel’s situation privately while continuing to develop the next generation of players at Carrington.
For now, Gabriel’s future remains undecided. Manchester United are attempting to retain one of their most highly regarded young prospects, while major European clubs continue to monitor developments.
