Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for £125 million, matching the joint-British transfer record and adding another major piece to their midfield rebuild. The Argentina international reunites with Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea, as City attempt to close the gap on reigning Premier League champions Arsenal.
The transfer concludes a prolonged negotiation and follows City’s earlier record investment in Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for a fee of up to £116 million. City have also signed Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, meaning their midfield reconstruction has cost more than £300 million.
Fernández is expected to operate alongside Anderson and Bouaddi in a new-look central unit. His ability to play in advanced midfield positions gives City another creative option, although his role will need to be defined within a squad that already contains Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki.
The reshaping of the midfield was accelerated by significant departures. Rodri has joined Barcelona for an initial €60 million, while Bernardo Silva, Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders have also left the club. City’s recruitment has therefore been designed not simply to add quality but to replace a group of influential midfielders.
The scale of Fernández’s fee has created considerable pressure. City have invested heavily in their squad and will now be expected to challenge Arsenal immediately. Former England defender Jamie Carragher believes the signing makes City Arsenal’s biggest threat in the title race.
Arsenal finished seven points clear of City last season and will begin the new campaign as favourites to retain the title. The Gunners, however, face the additional demands of European competition, while City’s Champions League campaign has already ended, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with a clearer domestic schedule.
Mikel Arteta has acknowledged Fernández’s quality, describing him as a player with strong character, tactical understanding and a detailed knowledge of the game. Those attributes were central to City’s decision to pursue him, particularly after Rodri’s departure created a major vacancy in the centre of the pitch.
The title race will also be influenced by the two clubs’ head-to-head meetings. City defeated Arsenal in the March EFL Cup final, providing Guardiola’s side with psychological momentum, while the Premier League fixture between the clubs is scheduled for 19 April.
City currently have a game in hand at home against Crystal Palace, giving them an opportunity to reduce the gap at the top of the table. Fernández’s arrival increases their options in midfield and raises expectations around the club, but the transfer will ultimately be judged by whether City can turn their financial investment into silverware.
For Arsenal, the move confirms that their closest rivals have responded aggressively to last season’s title victory. For City, it represents a statement that they intend to reclaim the Premier League crown. The Fernández transfer has transformed the contest before the new season has fully taken shape.
