Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the Premier League season reached a new low as Roberto De Zerbi’s side suffered a 2–0 defeat against Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs have now lost their opening two league matches without scoring, leaving them bottom of the table with zero points.
After finishing 17th last season, Tottenham entered the new campaign hoping that a major summer rebuild would bring immediate improvement. Instead, the team has struggled to create chances and has conceded five goals across its first two matches. The pressure on De Zerbi is already increasing, although the manager has insisted that he will not panic after such an early setback.
The first half against Newcastle was relatively even, with Tottenham showing some attacking promise but failing to convert their opportunities. Newcastle goalkeeper Lucas Horníček made important saves from Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke as the hosts attempted to take control.
Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Anthony Elanga controlled a header from Amar Dedić, turned inside the penalty area and struck a low effort that went in off the post. The goal was Elanga’s second in as many league matches after he had also scored against Liverpool on the opening weekend.
Tottenham responded with substitutions, but the changes did not produce the required improvement. Newcastle remained organized and continued to threaten on the counterattack.
The visitors doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. Substitute Nick Woltemade headed a corner toward the six-yard box, where Yoane Wissa produced an inventive finish, hooking the ball over his head and past the goalkeeper.
The victory gave Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League win as Newcastle manager. The Magpies had begun the campaign with a 2–2 draw against Liverpool, meaning they now have four points from their first two matches.
The result also continued Newcastle’s strong recent record against Tottenham. The Magpies have now won six of the clubs’ last eight Premier League meetings and have avoided defeat in seven of those matches. Spurs have also failed to keep a clean sheet against Newcastle in 14 consecutive league games.
Tottenham’s attacking problems were the clearest concern. The team enjoyed periods of possession but struggled to break down Newcastle’s defensive structure or create clear chances after falling behind. New arrivals Omar Marmoush and Savinho were expected to add greater threat, although Savinho missed the match because of muscle fatigue.
De Zerbi must now find a way to give Tottenham more penetration in the final third. Dominic Solanke, Richarlison and Marmoush all offer different attacking qualities, but the team needs a more reliable structure to bring them into dangerous positions.
For Newcastle, the result was an encouraging display of defensive discipline and attacking efficiency. Elanga is already becoming an important threat on the right, while Wissa’s movement and inventive finishing give Jaissle another valuable option in the final third.
Tottenham’s early position should not yet be treated as a final judgment on De Zerbi’s reign, but the warning signs are serious. Spurs have invested heavily in the squad, yet they remain without a goal after two matches.
The manager now faces an urgent task: improve Tottenham’s attacking coordination, restore confidence and ensure that the team becomes more competitive before the gap at the bottom of the table grows.
