Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool Future in Focus as Manchester City Pursuit Intensifies

Liverpool are monitoring Cody Gakpo’s fitness ahead of their Premier League meeting with Fulham, after the Netherlands forward missed the Champions League win over Atlético Madrid with adductor discomfort.

Gakpo was omitted from Andoni Iraola’s matchday squad for Liverpool’s 2–1 victory over Atlético at Anfield as a precaution. The 27-year-old experienced tightness in both adductors after the previous league win at Ipswich Town, but Liverpool do not consider the issue to be a serious injury.

“Cody finished the game against Ipswich with some adductor issues,” Iraola said. “It is not a proper injury. We didn’t want to risk him and it makes sense he can rest and hope we can have him for the next game.”

Iraola said Gakpo remained a doubt for Fulham because he had not resumed full training. “With Cody, we will see,” the Liverpool head coach said. “He didn’t train yesterday. Today, we will try with him and let’s see if he’s ready for tomorrow or if we need to wait for the next one.”

Gakpo’s absence gave summer signing Bradley Barcola an opportunity to start against Atlético, while Rio Ngumoha also featured in Liverpool’s attacking line. Barcola was substituted late after suffering cramp, although Iraola expects him to be available for the Fulham fixture.

The Dutch forward remains an important part of Liverpool’s plans despite transfer interest during the summer. Manchester City made an offer worth up to £80 million for Gakpo, but Liverpool rejected the proposal and closed the door on a move before the transfer deadline.

Gakpo signed a new five-year Liverpool contract in August 2025 after helping the club win the Premier League title. He has scored 50 goals and provided 23 assists in 180 appearances for Liverpool.

Liverpool will hope Gakpo can return soon as they prepare for a demanding run of Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup fixtures.
