Chelsea are in talks over a possible late move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez before the transfer window closes on 1 September. Martínez’s representatives approached Chelsea, and the club have opened discussions with his camp as they assess whether to strengthen the goalkeeping position. Chelsea have not yet agreed a transfer with Villa.

The interest follows criticism of Robert Sánchez after his performance in Chelsea’s 3–2 victory over Fulham on Monday. New head coach Xabi Alonso is considering his options, with Chelsea also able to call on goalkeeper Mike Penders. The club have not made a final decision on whether to pursue Martínez or continue developing their existing options.

Martínez’s future at Aston Villa became uncertain after the club agreed to sign Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma for an initial fee of around €30 million, potentially rising to €35 million with bonuses. The 23-year-old is expected to compete for the No. 1 position, while Martínez’s proposed move to Juventus collapsed earlier in the window.

The Argentina international did not feature in Villa’s opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle after serving a suspension. With Suzuki now arriving and Martínez’s position uncertain, Villa may be willing to consider a late transfer if the financial terms are acceptable.

Chelsea and Villa have already conducted significant business this summer. Villa sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a British-record £117 million, while Alejandro Garnacho moved to Villa on loan in a deal that includes a conditional obligation to buy. Villa also retain interest in Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who is valued at approximately £65 million.

Martínez would bring Premier League experience, leadership and international pedigree to Chelsea, but the move remains unresolved. Talks are continuing with his representatives and Aston Villa, while Chelsea weigh the cost of adding a veteran goalkeeper against the possibility of giving Penders a larger role.
