Chelsea Confirm Pursuit of Roma Midfielder Manu Kone Ahead of Transfer Window Closure

Chelsea’s summer pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Koné has returned to the spotlight after Gian Piero Gasperini explained why the France international remained in Italy. The Blues made contact late in the transfer window, but a move did not materialise, leaving Roma with a player their manager regards as central to his plans.

Gasperini said the timing made a transfer difficult to complete. In an interview with Sky Sport, he explained that there was insufficient time to organise a deal, noting that transfers involve numerous people and that preparing contracts alone can take several days. Roma also lacked a viable replacement for the midfielder.

The coach welcomed the outcome, saying he was pleased Koné had stayed and expected him to continue increasing his value. His comments concerned Chelsea’s approach during the closed summer window, rather than negotiations approaching an imminent transfer deadline.

The extent of Chelsea’s interest requires careful distinction. Reports suggested a potential deal worth around €60 million, but Roma sporting director Tony D’Amico said no formal offer had arrived. He described the discussions on the final day of the window as “informative contacts,” rather than advanced negotiations.

D’Amico also rejected reports that Gasperini had issued an ultimatum over Koné’s future. The manager subsequently denied personally vetoing a transfer, explaining that there had been neither enough time to conduct negotiations nor an official proposal from Chelsea. Together, their accounts establish that contact occurred without confirming an agreed deal.

Chelsea have nevertheless been linked with another approach when the January window opens. Reporting attributed to Tuttomercato suggests Liverpool could also provide competition as they assess midfield options. Neither a new bid nor an agreement has been confirmed, and Koné’s contract until June 2029 gives Roma a strong negotiating position.

Retaining Koné preserves an important part of Gasperini’s midfield. The coach believes the Frenchman can develop further and increase his value, making any future approach a question of both financial terms and Roma’s ability to replace his contribution. The difficulty of finding a suitable alternative was a significant consideration during the summer.

For now, Koné remains a Roma player. Chelsea’s previous interest may lead to another approach, but the immediate story is Gasperini’s explanation of why a summer move did not happen and his satisfaction that the midfielder stayed. A January transfer remains a possibility—not a deal nearing completion.
