The Ghana Football Association has reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, bringing the 73-year-old Portuguese manager back less than two months after he stepped down following Ghana’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. The agreement followed discussions involving the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, although the length and financial terms of Queiroz’s new mandate have not been disclosed.

Queiroz’s immediate priority will be Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars are scheduled to open their qualifying programme away to Ivory Coast on 24 September, with the upcoming international window running from 21 September to 6 October.

The veteran coach initially took charge only 72 days before the 2026 World Cup after Ghana parted company with Otto Addo following friendly defeats by Austria and Germany in March. Despite the limited preparation time, Queiroz guided Ghana out of Group L before the team were eliminated by Colombia in the Round of 32.

His first spell was short and brought mixed results. Ghana defeated Panama, drew with England and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and suffered defeats to Croatia and Colombia. The Black Stars’ World Cup journey ended with a 1–0 loss to Colombia in the knockout stage.

Queiroz’s return has prompted debate among supporters over the team’s direction and style of play. Critics have questioned whether his approach can produce a more attacking and consistent Ghana side, while supporters point to the difficult circumstances surrounding his initial appointment and the limited time he had to prepare for the World Cup.

The reappointment gives Ghana continuity ahead of a demanding qualification schedule. Queiroz will now focus on refining the squad, establishing tactical clarity and preparing the Black Stars for their opening AFCON qualifier against Ivory Coast as Ghana seek to build momentum after their World Cup campaign.
